Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials

The Library does not advocate particular beliefs or views. The selection of any given item is not an endorsement of the viewpoint expressed. Selections are made on the merits of the material in relation to collection development and serving the needs of patrons.

The library may provide materials representing all possible approaches to public issues of a controversial nature.

Library materials will not be marked to show approval or disapproval, and all materials will stand on open shelves equally accessible to all patrons, except to protect a valuable item from damage or theft or other unavoidable physical restriction.

Choice of materials used by children is the responsibility of their guardians. Selection will not be inhibited by the possibility that materials may come into the possession of children.

Please note: It is part of the library’s Collection Development Policy that materials are evaluated as complete works and not on the basis of a particular passage or passages.

Therefore, only those requests in which the initiator has read/listened/viewed the ENTIRE work will be considered. The Library will consider all complaints about library materials. The complaint procedure is as follows:

  1. Staff on duty will listen to the complaint and ask patron to fill out a "Request for Reconsideration of Materials" form. If the patron is not satisfied, offer to refer the patron to the appropriate Department Head.

  2. If the patron is not satisfied, the Department Head will present the written complaint to the Executive Director.

  3. If the patron is not satisfied and requests an item be withdrawn from the collection, the Director may offer to take the matter to the Board of Trustees for a decision.

  4. Following the Board of Trustees' discussion, the patron will be notified by the President of the Board of Trustees or the Executive Director.
